1-day course Biodiesel

Introduction: feedstocks, production, storage and use of biodiesel

This 1-day course is aimed at getting familiar with feedstocks, production, storage and use of biodiesel and intended for participants who have to deal with storage, processing or blending of biodiesel or need to be able to communicate with customers about these aspects. This course provides the necessary knowledge and insight into the complex field of biodiesel and feedstocks.

Better responding to the changes caused by the use of biodiesel

This course learns to better respond to the changes caused by the introduction and use of biodiesel in the (marine) gas oil and diesel fuel market, by gaining knowledge and developing insight into the production and properties of biodiesel and its feedstocks.

Demonstration of the conversion of vegetable oil into FAME (biodiesel)

During this course day, the conversion of a vegetable oil into FAME (biodiesel) will be demonstrated in steps. This demonstration can be provided in the Saybolt laboratory but also on location.

Theoretical part

This course has a theoretical part (with demonstration) and includes the following topics:

  • The feedstocks:
o    the properties and chemical composition of (vegetable) oils and fats
    o    the differences in properties
    o    interpreting the analysis data
o    aspects of storage and transshipment
  • The processing:
    o    the most important processes
o    transesterification with methanol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst
    o    chemical reactions
    o    the reaction products
  • The properties of biodiesel:
    o    specifications of Biodiesel
    o    biodiesel quality parameters (FAME)
    o    storage and blending considerations
  • The influence of biodiesel in mineral diesel oil:
o    specifications of automotive diesel oil
o    fuel quality compared to mineral diesel oil
o    advantages and disadvantages of blending biodiesel
    o    published experiences

The participants receive a compact reference book/handout with specific information. At the end of the course, participants receive a Certificate.

Course times

The course times are from 09.30 to 12.15 and from 13.15 to 16.00 hours and is held at a Saybolt location or at a location to be specified (in-company) in the English or German language.

Course fee

The fee of this course day is € 845,= per participant (excl. VAT, including lunch). This course can also be provided as an in-company course (on request).
