LPG: did you know….?? LPG is a common name for all C3 and C4 gases, but often referred to as automotive gas or bottled gas, both being a mixture of propane and butane.

LPG is commonly stored in pressurised tanks and also transported in this way. The tanks are not completely filled, because liquid LPG will expand with increasing temperatures. Tanks and tank cars are therefore equipped with pressure relief valves to prevent pressure build-up due to unforeseen circumstances. When larger volumes are being stored, or, when transported overseas, cooling in stead of pressurising will be applied.

Applications of LPG are widespread: it is used as a (cracking) feedstock for the petrochemical industry as well as for the production of e.g. MTBE (octane booster) or alkylate fuel at the refinery. Also applications entail the use as a bottled gas (recreational) or as an (clean) automotive fuel substituting gasoline in some countries or polluted areas.
